Barloworld SEM has launched a range of new utility-class wheel loaders aimed at users looking for an affordable answer to simple, everyday earthmoving requirements, but with superior backup and support.

With close to 500 SEM wheel loaders in the field and a significant share of the local Chinese wheel loader market, Barloworld SEM is continuously looking to add value to its range, says National Sales Manager, André Bruyns. “We evaluated the local market and found significant demand for utility wheel loaders, with this sector having grown by leaps and bounds over the past few years.”

The three new models complement the SEM premium range, which consists of four wheel loaders as well as a motor grader.

Aimed at customers in agriculture, smaller contractors and applications such as sand and brick yards, the new machines provide an attractive, no-nonsense option for users who don’t need the more sophisticated technology of the premium SEM range, says Bruyns.

The new wheel loaders feature SEM components instead of the Caterpillar Legacy components found in the premium SEM range. This enables SEM to compete in the lower-level utility market while offering our customers the level of service they would expect from Barloworld,” says Bruyns. The company found that many end users were buying utility-class wheel loaders through smaller companies that do not necessarily have the infrastructure to service and maintain machines to the required standards.

Barloworld SEM leverages synergies within the Barloworld Handling group of companies to secure a strong customer support footprint, thus limiting the risks often associated with capital equipment in the lower-price category.

The Barloworld Handling customer support network includes a countrywide service centre network established for Hyster lift trucks. Structures were also in place from the beginning to ensure high parts availability and manage warranty issues.

New machine in premium range

A new machine has also been added to the premium SEM range. The 60kW SEM 618B has a bucket capacity of 1m3 and a rated load of 1.8t. The other machines in the premium range are the 92kW SEM 639B and the top-of-the-range 165kW SEM 658C and 168kW SEM 668C.

These SEM wheel loaders are widely used in the construction, agriculture and quarrying industries and also in mining-related operations such as moving stockpiles. Some of the SEM machines sold into South Africa have clocked more than 10 000 hours, a measure of their performance and reliability, and of the strength of local backup provided.

SEM wheel loaders are also sold in Mozambique and Angola, again supported by the Barloworld Handling service infrastructure.
